Norma Banford (Brockville General Volunteer Association Representative)
A Message from the Foundation...
We’d like to begin by expressing our gratitude. We are humbled by and very grateful for the generosity of our donors. Your support has been overwhelming during these unprecedented times.
As a Foundation, we continued to face changes in our work and engagement with donors and supporters. During this time of change, support from our community has been a constant. We applaud our many volunteers and event organizers who were determined to find a way to reimagine events to ensure their continuity.
The Heart and Sol organizing team again went virtual in June 2021 and raised over $50,000 for Cardiac Rehabilitation at BGH.
The Friends of Palliative Care Golf Tournament organizing committee adopted a modified two-day event in September 2021 and accomplished incredible success raising over $238,000.
After having to postpone in February of 2021, the Palliative Care Telethon returned in February 2022, which culminated in an extraordinary response from the community raising over $300,000.
The inaugural Ride the River in 2021 had to change gears amid COVID, which saw 100 riders choosing their own route and raising over $100,000. This served as a springboard for Ride the River 2022 - Ride for the MRI which was a tremendous success. With the generosity of sponsors, riders, donors, and most importantly our anonymous matching donor, over $800,00 was raised – unparalleled for any event in only its second year.
Whether through the Annual Appeal or targeted donations, your support ensures BGH can secure state-of-the-art equipment which is central to diagnosis, treatment, and care of all patients.
We are grateful for the many partners, donors, and community members who have stepped up to support the most critical equipment needs of Brockville General Hospital. The very generous donation of $1 million from the late Dr. Steve Zajacz and his wife Dina made possible the purchase of a new CT scan which was officially opened in November.
Each of these are foundational to the success of the $12.5 million Your Health Your Hospital MRI/Equipment campaign.
Other partners have been enduring in their support of BGH - Tim Horton’s Smile Cookie is one such example raising over $200,000 over the past 14 years.
These successes and examples speak to the resilience, resolve and generosity of our donors, partners, and supporters. It is also reflective of the unwavering support for our local hospital.
Throughout the past two years, we have all benefited from the courage and dedication of our front-line staff at BGH. Regardless of the program or clinical area, BGH staff were unwavering in the care they provided to patients.
The Brockville and District Hospital Foundation wishes to thank each of you for your commitment to and support of Brockville General Hospital. Your generosity has had such a profound and enduring impact on our hospital and indeed our greater community.

A Letter from the Executive Director...
Change is the only constant.
It seems fitting for the theme of my final AGM report as Executive Director, to reflect on change. We are often resistant of change, but we have come to realize that it is the only constant in our lives.
The past 14 years have been a great chapter in my career, largely due to the generous community we live in, a supportive Board of Directors to provide guidance, and a team of fellow colleagues that give 150% every day.
The past two years have been challenging due to the presence of COVID, but the more it restricted our fundraising efforts, the more creative we became. Where there is a will – there is a way!
There are too many moments to recall and share from my time as Executive Director, but I will look back at each moment and each of you with fondness and deep appreciation.
Now is the time to embrace change with confidence!
Joan Simon BDHF, Executive Director

CARDIAC REHABILITATION PROGRAM
BGH ASSUMES FUNDING
Effective April 1st, 2022 the Brockville General Hospital (BGH) assumed the funding for the Cardiac Rehabilitation Program.
Brockville General Hospital, and the Brockville and District Hospital Foundation is grateful for the past efforts made by the community and fundraising efforts to sustain this program. In particular, BGH would like to extend accolades to the now defunct Care & Share Golf Tournament that ran for 5-years from 2011 to 2016, and to the Heart & Solstice Committee for their dedication in raising funds for BGH’s Cardiac Rehabilitation Program over the past 14-years.
With today’s technology, some perseverance, and a significant number of donors/supporters, over $340,000 was raised for Brockville General Hospital’s Cardiac Rehabilitation Program. Thank you to all who made this virtual event possible.
NEW CT SCANNER INSTALLED AND
OPERATIONAL
Our new CT scanner is now up and running! The 160-slice scanner is capable of producing highly detailed images, giving more information for our physicians and nurses when they are treating patients. Purchase of the new scanner was made possible by a generous $1M donation by Dr. Steve and Dina Angel Zajacz through the Brockville & District Hospital Foundation. Pictured are Jon O’Brien, CT Technologist, Behrooz Izadi, Diagnostic Imaging Manager, and Matt O’Connell, CT Technologist, with the new machine.
TOTAL EQUIPMENT PURCHASES PROVIDED TO BGH OVER $1.4 MILLION YOUR DONOR DOLLARS AT WORK
MINOR EQUIPMENT NEEDS PURCHASED
EVERY LITTLE BIT HELPS
As with any hospital, medical equipment needs are great, and ongoing. Equipment reaches its end of lifecycle much sooner than in the past, and improvements in diagnosis and treatment require new technology. As a result of new medical procedures and technologies, BGH’s needs continue to grow.
THE COMMUNITY CONTINUES TO GIVE!
ANNUAL APPEAL
EXCEEDS GOAL BY RAISING OVER $219,000!
The BDHF’s 2021 Annual Appeal goal was to raise $200,000 to purchase a new bronchoscope tower for Brockville General Hospital’s Ambulatory Care Program. Three days before the end of the Annual Appeal the BDHF announced that it surpassed the $200,000 goal and raised a total of $219,149.16.
A bronchoscope tower is used by a Respirologist to detect the cause of breathing difficulties and lung problems. It is a highly complex system that combines special lighting, recording and cameras to look inside a patient’s lungs and airways. Having access to this equipment at BGH means patients will no longer have to travel to Kingston or Ottawa to have this procedure.
SHOW YOUR HEART
WITH THE HELP OF BROCKVILLE REAL CANADIAN SUPERSTORE, A TOTAL OF $1,969 WAS RAISED FOR THE BGH CARDIAC REHABILITATION PROGRAM!
During the week of February 5th - 14th the Brockville and District Hospital Foundation (BDHF) collaborated with the Brockville Real Canadian Superstore for the Foundation’s “Show Your Heart” Campaign. Superstore shoppers were given the opportunity to donate $2 at the cash during the week of the campaign with all proceeds going directly in support of the Brockville General Hospital’s (BGH) Cardiac Rehabilitation Program.
TIM HORTONS’ SMILE COOKIE CAMPAIGN
A SWEET SUCCESS RAISING OVER $25,000!
Tim Hortons (Brockville locations) Smile Cookie fundraiser was a sweet success having raised $25,036.60.
Proceeds from this year’s Smile Cookie campaign went towards purchasing a Chest Compression System for Brockville General Hospital’s Emergency Department.
ONTARIO GOVERNMENT ANNOUNCES RESIDENTS OF BROCKVILLE AND SURROUNDING AREAS WILL BENEFIT FROM A NEW MRI MACHINE
On October 28, 2021 it was announced that the Ontario government will be investing in annual operating costs towards a new magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machine at BGH. The cost of the MRI machine and suite are estimate at $6 million.
Having this equipment in our hospital will help to diagnose medical conditions such as abnormalities of the brain, tumors, cysts, and soft-tissue injuries in other parts of the body. This imaging can help physicians provide early diagnosis and treatment of medical conditions, which can make a big impact on an individual’s quality of life. Local residents
currently, face long waits and must travel out of town to Kingston, Ottawa or Cornwall to access MRI imaging. Many people are waiting an average of four to five months, which impacts diagnosis, care and quality of life.
This recent announcement along with annual operating costs are largely dependent upon government funding. The Infrastructure, equipment and technology (capital costs) are made possible through generous community support. Investing in modern equipment and technologies is vital to BGH because physicians and staff use these tools every day to test, diagnose, and treat patients.
“ACCESS TO THIS TYPE OF TECHNOLOGY IS CRITICAL FOR OUR COMMUNITY AND I’M PROUD THAT OUR GOVERNMENT HAS COMMITTED TO PROVIDING THE ANNUAL FUNDING TO SUPPORT AN MRI AT BGH.”
- STEVE CLARK , MPP FOR LEEDS-GRENVILLE-THOUSAND ISLANDS AND RIDEAU LAKES.
“AS A HIGH-PERFORMING MEDIUM-SIZED HOSPITAL, BGH IS WELL POSITIONED TO EXPAND INTO THESE SERVICES. INTRODUCING MRI SERVICES AT BGH MEANS BETTER ACCESS, CLOSER TO HOME.”
- MICHAEL ADAMCRYCK , CHAIR OF BGH BOARD OF DIRECTORS
“THIS IS AN EXCITING ANNOUNCEMENT FOR OUR COMMUNITY AND HOSPITAL. A NEW SUITE TO HOUSE THE MRI MACHINE WILL BE ADDED TO THE HOSPITAL, AND WE ANTICIPATE THE MRI WILL BE FULLY OPERATIONAL IN LATE 2023.”
- NICK VLACHOLIAS , PRESIDENT AND CEO AT BGH

RIDE THE RIVER
After “shifting gears” to meet ever increasing COVID restrictions, Ride the River 2021 was achieved – a weeklong event that asked our riders to “ride on their own –their own way – their own route.”
Over 100 riders participated in the event from May 22nd to May 30th, and with their efforts, the support of our sponsors, over $100,000 was raised for BGH.
Heartfelt thanks are extended to Bob and Jane Clark – Ride the River co-chairs. You came with the idea of a cycling fund raiser and then provided the leadership to bring it from concept to reality.
Thanks to all member of the organizing team, Foundation staff, and all riders, sponsors, donors and supporters who contributed to the success of this event.
It is amazing that this first-time fundraiser, despite the challenges and uncertainty, captured the enthusiasm of many and surpassed its goal.
