During the week of Feb. 5 to Feb. 14 the Brockville and District Hospital Foundation (BDHF) collaborated with the Brockville Real Canadian Superstore for the Foundation’s “Show Your Heart” Campaign. Superstore shoppers were given the opportunity to donate $2 at the cash during the week of the campaign with all proceeds going directly in support of the Brockville General Hospital’s (BGH) Cardiac Rehabilitation Program.

“The whole focus of the Show Your Heart Campaign is to bring an awareness that a Cardiac Rehabilitation Program operates out of BGH,” stated Joan Simon, Executive Director. BGH’s Cardiac Rehabilitation Program offers a customized program that assists patients following a cardiac event. The program receives minimal government funding and relies on donations, fundraisers and community supporters, like the Brockville Real Canadian Superstore. There are no fees charged to the participants of the program.

Simon further noted, “We are extremely fortunate to have this program in Brockville and with the community’s help we can keep this service close to home.”

The BDHF would also like to thank the Superstore staff who made this campaign possible. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

Palliative Care Telethon cancelled

The Palliative Care Telethon, a titan among local fundraisers and a key source of revenue for the service at Brockville General Hospital, is the latest casualty of COVID-19.

Wayne Blackwell, co-chairman of the event’s organizing committee with Bruce Wylie, said Wednesday the organizers have decided the 30-Hour Telethon for Palliative Care Services won’t happen in any form this year, out of concern the usually massive volunteer effort might expose too many to the risk of coronavirus infection. THE BROCKVILLE AND DISTRICT HOSPITAL FOUNDATION IS TEAMING UP WITH THE BROCKVILLE REAL CANADIAN SUPERSTORE TO RAISE FUNDS FOR AN INVALUABLE HOSPITAL PROGRAM

PHOTO CAPTION: Brockville resident, Dave Publow is joined by the Brockville  Superstore Store Manager, Jason Euverman with one of the posters for the Brockville and District Hospital Foundation’s Show Your Heart Fundraiser. The fundraiser is to raise funds for Brockville General Hospital’s Cardiac Rehabilitation Program.

February is Heart Month, and there is no other perfect time to raise funds for the Cardiac Rehabilitation Program that operates at Brockville General Hospital (BGH). This year, the Brockville and District Hospital Foundation (BDHF) is collaborating with the Brockville Real Canadian Superstore to raise funds for this vital program. From February 5 to February 14, a donation of $2 can be made at all of the cash registers in support of the Cardiac Rehabilitation Program.

BGH’s Cardiac Rehabilitation Program was developed in 2009 to assist patients in getting their life back following a cardiac event. Testimonials have abounded over the years and we invited Brockville resident Dave Publow to share his story with us.

On November 20, 2019, after attending the YMCA for an early morning workout, Dave Publow’s life took a drastic turn. While attending daily mass that fateful day, Dave suffered a cardiac arrest. Thanks to his parish priest, fellow parishioners, the Brockville Fire Service, EMS paramedics, and the staff of the Emergency Department of Brockville General Hospital (BGH), Dave was stabilized and then rushed to the Kingston General Hospital (KGH), where he received a stent and spent 6 days in the Cardiac Unit. Dave survived because of the care he received at both BGH and KGH.

On being discharged from KGH, Dave was placed in the care of Dr. Jamie Hynd and the Brockville General Hospital’s Cardiac Rehabilitation Program. This program, which is funded principally by community donations, is so valuable to survivors like Dave, who can access cardiac rehabilitation care without having to travel to Kingston or Ottawa. This program consists of exercise, nutrition education and monitoring of vital signs, all   provided by a Kinesiologist and Registered Nurse, under the supervision of a cardiologist.

Dave’s sessions in the Cardiac Rehabilitation Program were prescribed for 24 visits and he is about to “graduate” from the program in early February. This program seems to always be at capacity due to the prevalence of heart disease. It has been an invaluable resource for him, both in his physical recovery to full health, but also for the mental aspect of recovery as well. Dave is a vocal advocate of this program in our community, and thanks the staff of the Cardiac Rehabilitation Program for its excellent care. This is an invaluable program that must be preserved in our community.

The Brockville and District Hospital Foundation would like to thank the Brockville Real Canadian Superstore, and its employees, for making this fundraiser possible. We could not have done it without you!
